Common problems with the Playstation 3:
- Blu-ray laser weakening or failure.
Symptoms: Skipping in games, loss of audio during gameplay, freezing, discs will not load at all.
Problem Description: The diode which supplies power to create the laser beam commonly fails in the Blu-ray lasers, which prevents the unit from producing the violet (“blue”) laser light required to reflect off discs and provide reading feedback to the console. Thus the console is unable to read discs correctly or at all.
Solutions: Laser and general console service / Complete blu-ray laser replacement / Complete Blu-ray laser and optical block replacement.Please note, we offer two types of Blu-ray lens for the older 60GB units that have a 400AAA model lens, we recommend the genuine refurbished units which are more expensive, but come with a 6 months warranty (try and find that anywhere else!). If you are on a budget or are shopping around, we can provide the cheaper Chinese replacements which most places use, although these are not as durable and come with less warranty. Newer model Blu-ray lenses are all brand new.
- Console will not turn on or is freezing in-game or after prolonged gameplay.
Symptoms: Freezing that requires shutdown from the back power switch / The console when turned on flashes a green light, beeps, then flashes yellow quickly and eventually red lights. (a.k.a “Yellow Lights of Death” – YLOD).
Problem Description: Modern environmental standards require that consumer electronics be produced with lead-free solder. A downside to this is the weakness and tendancy for lead-free solders to fail under compression (from heatsinks) and with stress cycles from expansion/contraction during normal use. The RSX (Reality Synthesizer) chipset in the Playstation 3 is a BGA (Ball-grid array) package that is attached to the motherboard by hundreds of solder balls, if any one of these fail, you experience the above symptoms.
Solutions: Reflowing of the lead-free solder balls with our Infrared BGA rework station / Reballing of the RSX chipset with lead solder (Bullet-proof repair).
